Career Change

You may reach a point in your career where you feel that you would like or need to change careers. This may involve a lateral move within the company or it may require you to change companies altogether. Before you make the changes you should ask yourself a few important questions. These questions will help you identify what your reason is for the change and also if it is a viable option for you.

  • What are your reasons for wanting to change your career?
  • Do you really want to change career or is something within your current position making you unhappy?
  • What kind of work do you want to do?
  • What are your skills and capabilities and do you want to use them?
  • What are your values?
  • Are you prepared to study/retrain or start from the bottom again?
  • How much money do you need to make?
  • Will you regret it if you don't?
  • How do you think that your life will be different if you pursue this career change?

A career change will have a big impact on your life. If you have to study, this may take precious time away from your family. Do you have family and friends to support you through this? If you have to start from the bottom again, are you able to afford a drop in salary? What if the grass in not greener on the other side; will you go back to your old industry? It is both a nerve wrecking experience and very exciting. You get an opportunity to re-define your life, to re-create yourself and to find fulfilment in your career.

However, your career changes need to be made because it is something that you are driven to do, rather than changing careers because something in your current position does not work for you, whether it be a person, or a responsibility or the company ethics. All these factors can be sorted-out without you changing careers. If you are unsure about which route to take I would advise you to seek out professional help with a career coach.
