School Leavers

You about to go into Grade 12 and everyone from your parents, teachers and friends are asking you that all important question:

What are your plans for the rest of your life?

If you are one of the fortunate few, you have mapped out your career. You know what motivates you and where you are going. If you are like the rest of us, you have no idea what you want to do with the rest of your life. There are some things that you know you are good at, but you may be asking yourself some key questions:

  • Am I able to make a living doing the things that I am good at?
  • Do I actually enjoy those things?
  • How can I be expected to make decisions that will impact the rest of my life?
  • I really do not know what direction to take?
  • I may want to take a gap year?
  • Should I start working and then decide what I career I want to pursue?

You may feel pressurised in to making decisions that you do not feel ready to make. The best advice that I can give you; only make a decision when you are ready. There are options open to you and you do not need to a concrete decision about your life, immediately. If you are undecided, then you need an interim plan until you know what you would like to do with the rest of your life.

I always encourage students to study further, even if it is later on. If you enrol in a course at a Tertiary institution, just because you want to keep everyone else happy, you could end up wasting your time and your or someone else's money. Studying is important as it gives you a marketable skill. However doing something to get your parents, teachers or friends off your back will make you miserable.

If you are torn between two or more courses and do not know which one to choose, do some research into each of them. See if you can speak to people who are already practicing the profession and ask them what they enjoy about their careers and what the dislike about their careers. This should give you some clarity about the decisions that you are facing.

If you are still feeling stuck, seek professional help from a Career/Life Coach. This person will be objective and you will be able to explore all your options.
